The Diploma in Ethnic Languages program offered by the Faculty of Language and Communication (FBK), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is a new academic program designed to strengthen the heritage of language, literature, and ethnic culture in Malaysia. This program focuses on efforts to produce a young generation who are knowledgeable and skilled in local ethnic languages such as Iban, Kadazandusun, and others, in line with the country's aspirations in preserving linguistic diversity and cultural identity.
The curriculum of this program balances aspects of language proficiency, basic linguistics, ethnic literature, intercultural communication, as well as the application of heritage values and national identity. Students are also exposed to the use of technology in language learning and the production of communication materials that are relevant to multi-racial communities.
In addition to providing a solid foundation in the field of language and communication, this program also serves as a feeder program for students who wish to continue their studies to the Bachelor of Education (Ethnic Languages) with Honours level at UPSI. This program is an important platform in producing young people who are able to contribute to the preservation and development of ethnic languages in Malaysia.
